Are ION Wetsuits Warm Enough for the North Sea? — Review
ION wetsuits work in the North Sea—but thickness matters. We've shipped hundreds to riders from the UK to Scandinavia, and here's what actually keeps you warm when water hits 6°C.
Yes. Pick a 4/3 ION suit for autumn and spring, and a 5/4 for winter (December–February). North Sea water ranges 6–14°C by season, and ION's sealed seams and thermal lining handle it well. If you're budget-conscious, the Neilpryde Rise 5/4 Fullsuit GBS FZ 2026 delivers similar performance at a lower price.
01 — Water temperaturesHow Cold Is the North Sea, Really?
Winter sits at 6–8°C. Spring and autumn hover around 10–12°C. Summer peaks at 12–14°C but only in July and August. Below that and you're losing body heat fast without the right suit.
Most riders who've spent a season in the North Sea tell us the same thing: underestimate the cold once, and you'll buy a thicker suit immediately after. The water's relentless. A 3/2 mm wetsuit works in September, but by November it's not enough. Your core stays warm for maybe 90 minutes, then your fingers start going numb.
02 — Fit and sealingWhy ION Works—and When It Doesn't
ION's sealed seams and thermal lining are built for cold water. You're not paying for fancy marketing—you're paying for seals that don't let water flush in and out with every paddle. That matters when water's below 10°C.
Where ION sometimes falls short: fit. ION suits run snug through the chest and shoulders, which is great for sealing but brutal if you're broader-backed. Neilpryde's Serene and Vamp lines cut wider. If you've struggled with ION sizing before, try the Neilpryde Vamp 5/4 or Serene 5/4 instead—both are GBS (glued and blind-stitched) and handle North Sea winters just as well.

Frequently asked
No. Winter (December–February) is 6–8°C. You'll be cold in 90 minutes. Go 5/4 mm.
Not noticeably if you rinse in freshwater and air-dry. Heat shrinks neoprene, so avoid the tumble dryer.
Flat-stitched seams split water and let it flush through your suit. GBS seals it. Below 10°C, it's the difference between comfort and hypothermia.
Not really. A 5/4 mm is miserable in 20°C+ water. Buy a thin 2/2 mm for summer, keep the 5/4 for winter.
