La Torche is where Atlantic power meets French hospitality. Perched on Brittany's southwestern coast near Plomeur, this exposed headland catches consistent westerly swells and Atlantic frontal winds that make it one of France's most reliable kitesurfing destinations. The massive sandy beaches curve away from dramatic granite cliffs, giving you plenty of space to fly a kite without crowds. Whether you're chasing thermals in autumn or battling spring gales, La Torche delivers the kind of raw, unfiltered sessions that remind you why you fell in love with the sport.

What sets La Torche apart is its accessibility and variety. You've got a protected bay for learning, open beach for freestyle, and reef breaks for wave riding--all within walking distance. The local vibe is respectful and welcoming; the café culture post-session is genuinely excellent. Water temps drop to 8°C in winter, so a proper winter wetsuit isn't optional, but the consistency of wind and wave makes the cold water worth every shiver.

02 -- ACCESS

Best Spots & Getting There

  • La Torche Main Beach -- The heart of the action. Wide, sheltered bay perfect for beginners and all-rounder sessions. Parking right beside the beach, showers, and rental shops on-site. North-northeast wind preferred; lee conditions in strong westerlies.
  • Pointe de la Torche (Headland) -- Advanced riders head here for chop and wave riding in strong wind. Exposed and powerful; respectable current runs on the flood tide. Only for confident riders with local knowledge.
  • Plage de Kermor -- Just north of main beach. Sandier, less crowded, good for learning and light wind sessions. Shallower water and more protection from Atlantic swell.
  • Getting There -- Fly into Brest (BIO), 1.5-hour drive west to Plomeur. Or Paris (2 CDG), 6.5-hour drive (or train to Quimper, 30min taxi). The D102 coastal road is spectacular and well-signed. Park at designated lots near the beach; €5/day standard rate.
  • Accommodation -- Plomeur village has guesthouses and Airbnb within 10min walk. Brest has larger hotel choice. Book early in autumn and spring--La Torche gets busy on weekends with Paris day-trippers and international riders.
03 -- CONDITIONS

Wind & Weather by Season

Month Avg Wind (kts) Direction Water Temp (°C) Rating Jan-Feb 16-20 W, SW 8-9 ★★★★★ March-April 14-18 SW, NW 9-11 ★★★★☆ May-June 10-14 W, Variable 13-15 ★★★☆☆ July-Aug 8-12 Variable, E 16-17 ★★☆☆☆ Sept-Oct 12-16 SW, W 14-16 ★★★★★ Nov-Dec 15-19 SW, NW 10-12 ★★★★★

Best window: September-March. Winter is prime--strong Atlantic lows deliver reliable 15-22 knot wind, though conditions are choppy and cold. Spring offers lighter, more playful sessions. Summer is hit-or-miss; thermal sea breezes rarely exceed 12 knots. Always check Windy, Magic Seaweed, and local Facebook groups before driving; La Torche is exposed and can turn unpredictably.

04 -- GEAR

What Gear to Bring

Beginner Setup

Safe & Confident

A mid-range freeride kite (13-17m for autumn/winter wind), 135-155cm board, and a thick 5/4mm winter wetsuit. La Torche's shallow bay is forgiving, but you'll want flotation. Helmet mandatory--rocks and reef break nearby. Bring a buddy or use a lesson first session.

Advanced Setup

Wave & Freestyle Ready

Twin or triple kite quiver: 9-11m for strong winter gusts, 13-15m for moderate autumn, 17m for light spring. Wave board 135cm, freestyle board 139cm. Booties (rocky entry at Pointe de la Torche), 4/3mm wetsuit, impact vest. Leash and safety release essential--currents rip on spring tides.

05 -- RENT OR BUY?

Rent or Buy? Advice from Surf Store

Rent locally if: You're visiting for 3-5 days and flying in. La Torche has two reputable rental shops (La Torche Kitesurf, Evolution Kite) with recent Duotone and Cabrinha kites, watersports-grade boards, and winter wetsuits. Cost is €80-100/day for complete kit. Quality is good; gear is maintained. Book 48 hours ahead in peak season. The hassle of flying with kites is real--rental is smart for tourists.

Buy if: You're basing yourself in Brittany for a month, planning repeat trips, or want your own dialled setup. A reliable all-rounder like the Duotone Evo SLS 2026 or Cabrinha Nitro Apex 2026 costs €800-1200 new, plus board and wetsuit. Factor in travel insurance for flights. But once you own kit that matches La Torche's wind range (9-22 kts), you'll be fishing it out every time an Atlantic low moves in--and that's every week in winter. We ship EU-wide within 24h; free shipping from €99. Your gear will be in Plomeur before you are.
