Kitesurfing Paros — Golden Beach Spot Guide 2026
Why Paros -- Golden Beach, Greece Is Worth the Trip
Golden Beach on Paros is one of the Aegean's most reliable kitesurfing destinations, and I've spent enough summer weeks there to know why. The Etesian winds roll in from the north with clockwork consistency, especially from June onwards, and the setup--long sandy beach, shallow sheltered water, and minimal boat traffic--makes it ideal for intermediate riders looking to progress without the crowds of Tarifa or Hood River.
What sets Paros apart isn't just the wind. The water is genuinely warm (no thick winter wetsuit needed), the local tavernas serve cold beer steps from the beach, and the island has enough tourism infrastructure that you won't feel stranded. I've done sessions here where the only people on the beach were other kiters, and by evening you're eating fresh grilled octopus with a view across to Antiparos. It's the kind of spot that reminds you why we do this.
Best Spots & Getting There
- Golden Beach (Chrissí Ámmos) -- 3km of golden sand, the main kite zone, north-facing and sheltered from swell. Wind is most consistent here; shallow water for 400m+ offshore. Perfect for progressive intermediate riders.
- Santa Maria Beach -- West-facing, more exposed, better for stronger wind days (18+ kts). Sandier than Golden, fewer spectators, longer walks to launch.
- Piso Livadi Harbour -- Small fishing village 10km south, sheltered by islands. Only works in strong Etesian winds (20+ kts) but offers flat water and less crowding.
- Getting there -- Ferry from Athens (Piraeus, 3.5 hours) or Mykonos (1 hour). Golden Beach is 10km from the main port (Parikia); taxi/scooter rental recommended.
- Facilities -- Two kite schools on Golden Beach (board and kite rentals), beachfront tavernas, fresh water showers, parking. ATM and grocery shops in nearby Naoussa village, 15 min drive.
Wind & Weather by Season

From May through September, thermal gradients push cool air southward from the Black Sea, and Paros sits perfectly in that wind corridor. Mornings often start light (8-12 kts around 8am), building to steady 16-20 kts by midday, then easing slightly in the evening. It's textbook predictable--great if you want a full day session without surprises.
Golden Beach itself is relatively sheltered; even on peak days the water is choppy rather than swell-heavy, and the beach faces north, so south and westerly swells are blocked by the islands. This makes it one of the most forgiving spots in the Aegean--you won't get caught in the wind shadow of mountains like you do at some mainland launches.
What Gear to Bring
Light & Flexible Setup
Bring a 14m and 17m kite to cover 10-22 kts. A 2mm wetsuit for morning swims (water cools below the surface). Lightweight harness--you'll be wearing it all day in heat. Boots optional; some riders go barefoot on the sandy launch. Pack sunscreen, rashguard, and a hydration pack; heat is real in July-August.
Freestyle-Ready Quiver
Go smaller and nimble: 12m, 14m, and maybe a 10m for the occasional big day. Directional or hybrid board (water is flat enough for tricks, but you want control in thermals). 1.5mm summer suit. Harness with good margin support if you're doing pointers or handle passes. Sunglasses with secure strap essential.
Golden Beach demands a tight kite quiver because wind sits in a narrow bandwidth. The thermal consistency means you can plan ahead--check the forecast at 7am, rig the right kite, and go all-day without swaps. A 14m or 15m will handle 70% of your sessions alone.
The Evo SLS is my go-to for Paros thermals. Light depower, predictable in gusts, and you can hold a line in choppy water without fighting it. The 14m covers 90% of your days here. Proven in warm-water conditions across the Aegean.
ION's summer 2mm keeps you comfortable in 20-24°C water without overheating during land-drag training or walks. Flatlock seams stay sealed in salt, and the flex rating is high--important when you're in the water 4+ hours a day in Greek heat.
Rent or Buy? Advice from Surf Store
If you're flying from Europe and kitesurfing Paros is a one-week holiday, rent. Golden Beach has two reputable schools with rental quivers; expect €40-60 per day for a kite-and-bar, €25-40 for a board. The kites are usually 2-3 years old but maintained, and the schools will spot you on launch if conditions get tricky. You'll save €300+ versus checking a kite bag, and you avoid the airline baggage roulette.
If you're coming for a season or regularly visiting (say, three weeks a summer), buy. A used 14m Evo or Duotone Dice SLS on the secondhand market runs €600-900, and you own a kite that'll work across the Aegean--Paros, Naxos, even Rhodes. Factor in a travel bag (€100-150) and shipping back to Europe at season's end, and the math favours ownership if you're returning. Plus, your own gear is tuned to your weight and style; rental quivers are dialled for average riders.
