Windsurfing Gran Canaria — Pozo Izquierdo Guide 2026

Windsurfing Gran Canaria — Pozo Izquierdo Guide 2026

01 -- THE SPOT

Why Gran Canaria -- Pozo Izquierdo, Spain Is Worth the Trip

Pozo Izquierdo on Gran Canaria's north coast is Europe's most reliable windsurfing destination -- full stop. The trade wind corridor funnel here creates consistent thermals from spring through autumn, and the Saharan dust shield keeps the Atlantic swell manageable. You'll find wave sailors, freestyle riders, and freeride crews all sharing the same golden beach at once because the conditions are genuinely that good.

What makes windsurfing Gran Canaria's Pozo Izquierdo special isn't just the wind -- it's the community. Locals rig near palm trees, international pros base their winters here, and the vibe is welcoming without the pretension you'll find in some European spots. Water temperature stays between 18-22°C year-round, so a summer suit or light winter gear covers most riders. The beach itself is spacious, shallow for 80m offshore, and the nearest bar serves fresh ceviche. If you're serious about windsurfing, you'll make the trip.

02 -- ACCESS

Best Spots & Getting There

  • Pozo Izquierdo main beach -- The flagship spot. Shallow bay with thermal winds 12-22 knots from June to September, protected from big Atlantic swells. Launch from the south end, stay east of the markers.
  • Arguineguín (30km south) -- When Pozo is too light or crowded, this Atlantic-facing bay gets stronger trades and cleaner swell for wave sailing. Rougher takeoff, experienced riders preferred.
  • Meloneras (west coast) -- Sheltered alternative on lighter days. More scenic, fewer riders, good for technique work or freestyle when Pozo is above 20 knots.
  • Las Palmas airport access -- 1 hour from Pozo. Rent a car or book a shuttle (most hotels arrange them). Drive the GC2 north to Gáldar, then local roads to the beach.
  • Facilities onshore -- Shower stations, beach bars, board rental shops, and a growing number of AirBnbs within walking distance. No permit needed to rig.

June through August is the sweet spot. Thermal winds build through the afternoon (expect light mornings, solid midday-to-sunset sessions), water is warmest, and the international competition circuit peaks here. Winter isn't dead -- December-February brings Atlantic swells and consistent if lighter trades -- but spring and autumn offer the best all-rounder conditions.

04 -- GEAR

What Gear to Bring

Beginner

Light Setup for Learning

A 5.0-5.5m freeride sail (stable, forgiving) paired with a 90-100L freestyle/freewave board. Light summer suit (3/2mm). Aim for gear that's easy to handle in 14-18 knots -- that's your sweet learning window at Pozo.

Advanced

Quiver Approach

Bring three sails: 4.5m wave sail (for 20+ knot days), 5.5-6.0m freeride (daily driver), and a 7.0m light-air option. Pair with a dedicated wave board (70-85L) and a freewave cruiser (90-110L). Light summer or rashguard -- water stays warm.

For windsurfing Gran Canaria's Pozo Izquierdo conditions, most riders rig three sails: a 4.5m for thermals peaks (18-25 knots), a 5.5-6.0m as your everyday sail, and a 7.0m for lighter mornings or winter sessions. Beginner-friendly boards (freewave designs) forgive mistakes and float in light wind; wave boards demand more skill but unlock the swell potential. A summer suit or UV rashguard is usually enough -- the Atlantic water is mild.

05 -- RENT OR BUY

Rent or Buy? Advice from Surf Store

Rent if it's your first trip. Several local shops on the beach offer decent Duotone and Cabrinha kit for €25-40/day. Try three sails, two boards, and get a feel for what works in Pozo's wind rhythm before committing. Most travellers spend €150-200 renting for a week and leave knowing exactly what they'd buy next time.

Buy if you're staying longer or making repeat trips. We stock Duotone freeride and wave sails, Tabou boards, and JP foil gear -- all proven performers at Pozo. Shipping to Gran Canaria is €15-25, and having your own kit means familiar feel, no rental queues, and savings after three trips. If you're serious about windsurfing Gran Canaria's Pozo Izquierdo season (Jun-Sep is 3-4 months), owning makes sense.
