Kitesurfing Cabarete Dominican Republic — Guide 2026

Cabarete has been the Caribbean's kitesurfing capital for nearly two decades, and once you ride here, you'll understand why. The northern coast of the Dominican Republic sits directly in the trade wind belt, delivering consistent 15-25 knot breezes from November through March. The water is bathwater-warm year-round, the beaches are golden and relatively uncrowded compared to other Caribbean spots, and the reef-protected lagoons offer forgiving conditions for learners alongside gnarly downwind runs for experts.

What makes kitesurfing Cabarete special isn't just the wind--it's the community. The town has evolved into a proper rider's hub: dozens of schools, rental shops, beachfront restaurants, and a laid-back vibe that welcomes everyone from day-trippers to season-long refugees. You can be on the water by 10 a.m., eat fresh fish on the beach for lunch, and still catch an afternoon session before sunset. The water clarity is excellent, the sand is soft, and the reef keeps the swell manageable even on bigger days.

02 -- ACCESS

Best Spots & Getting There

  • Cabarete Main Beach -- The epicentre of the scene. Shallow lagoon protected by a reef bar, perfect for learners and flat-water freestyle. Gets crowded during peak season, but the space is generous and conditions are reliable. Direct access via the town seafront.
  • Encuentro -- Five minutes west of town. Bigger, more wave-focused break with stronger winds and faster conditions. Preferred by intermediate to advanced riders when the trade wind picks up. Parking and facilities are basic but adequate.
  • Cabarete Bay East -- Beyond the main beach toward Sosúa. Calmer lagoon with gentle sideshore wind, good for beginners and freestylers on lighter wind days. Less crowded than the main spot.
  • Getting There -- Fly into Punta Cana International Airport (PUJ), roughly 2 hours' drive east. Rent a car or book a transfer to Cabarete town. Most resorts and hotels are within walking distance of the beach.
  • Best Time to Land -- Arrive by mid-morning to claim a spot on the beach and scope conditions. Wind typically builds from 10 a.m. onwards and peaks mid-afternoon. Evening sessions (after 3 p.m.) can be lighter but are still rideable November-March.

04 -- GEAR

What Gear to Bring

Beginner

Learning Setup

Start with a 14-17m learner kite (high-depower, forgiving arc) and a twin-tip board 136-143 cm. Pack a 3/2 mm shorty for warmth in the early morning; afternoons rarely need more than a rash guard. One-size boots will do. You won't need a board bag on first arrival--rent gear locally and buy once you commit.

Advanced

Progression & Wave Setup

Bring a quiver: 9m for strong January-February wind, 12m for shoulder seasons, and a 14m for lighter days. Pack a twintip 135-138 cm plus a small wave board (90-100 L) for Encuentro downwind runs. Minimal wetsuit year-round; rash guard and boardshorts. Consider a tow-in helmet if you're exploring bigger days. Foot protection (reef boots) is essential at Encuentro.

Essential Gear for Cabarete

Cabarete's consistent wind means you'll spend serious time on the water. A versatile freeride kite that handles the 15-25 knot band is your best friend. We recommend having a mid-size (12-14m) in your quiver--it covers most conditions.

If you ride lighter wind days or want a playful, freestyle-biased platform, the Juice delivers solid slack and bar response without sacrificing upwind ability. For pure wave performance at Encuentro, a Duotone Neo or Rebel will shine on strong days.

05 -- RENT OR BUY?

Rent or Buy? Advice from Surf Store

Cabarete has excellent rental shops right on the main beach--Laureus, Cabarete Kite, and others offer complete rigs (kite + bar + board) for €30-50 per day. If you're staying a week or longer, short-term rental makes sense: it lets you dial in your sizing without airline baggage fees, and the rental shops maintain their gear diligently. Most will swap sizes throughout your trip as wind conditions shift. This is how we recommend most first-timers approach Cabarete.

However, if you're a committed rider or planning multiple trips, bringing your own kit pays off fast. You'll save money after just 10-15 days, and you ride gear you trust. Bring one all-round kite (12-14m), a durable board, and a bar and lines you've set up yourself. The main downside: airport hassle, risk of damage, and you're limited to one quiver. That said, many of our customers fly their gear to Cabarete, session hard for 2-3 weeks, then ship it home--it's worth it if you've got the time.
