Bol is the heartbeat of European windsurfing -- and for good reason. This Croatian fishing village on Brač Island has hosted international slalom competitions for three decades, built on a 1.3km golden-sand beach that's every rider's dream. The town sits at the mercy of the Bora wind, a strong northeasterly that funnels down from the Adriatic with clockwork reliability, especially during spring and autumn. Whether you're a freestyle learner lapping the bay or a wave warrior hunting bigger swell off the outer reefs, Bol delivers consistent conditions you simply can't find elsewhere in the Mediterranean.

What makes windsurfing Bol, Brač Island, Croatia so special isn't just the wind or the beach -- it's the ecosystem. Dozens of rental shops, schools, and local riders create an atmosphere of shared stoke. The town has zero pretence; accommodation is cheap, restaurants serve fresh fish for €8, and everyone from beginners to world-tour competitors shares the same water. Summer crowds are undeniable, but shoulder seasons (May and September) offer the sweet spot: warm water, manageable wind, and enough space to find your own corner of the bay.

02 -- ACCESS

Best Spots & Getting There

  • Bol Main Beach (Zlatni Rat area) -- The iconic sandy crescent. Shallow at the shore, deeper offshore. Best for learning and freeride; protected from chop by the peninsula. Most rental shops and schools base here.
  • Outer Reef Break (east of Zlatni Rat) -- Where the Bora accelerates and wave faces build. Advanced riders hunt here in autumn swells; choppy, powerful, rewarding.
  • Murvica Bay (west) -- Sheltered lagoon, lighter wind, flat water. Perfect for flat-water tricks and days when the main beach is gusty and overpowered.
  • Ferry & Transport -- Bol is 50km south of Split airport. Ferry from Split harbour to Bol (60 mins) or drive to Supetar (Brač north) and drive 40 mins south. Rent a car; buses exist but are infrequent. Summer parking fills fast; arrive early or use the seafront lots (paid).
  • Best Months to Go -- May (warm, moderate wind, fewer tourists), September-October (stronger Bora, bigger swell, still swimmable). July-August: crowded, light morning wind, but summer reliability. December-February: cold, consistent, swell-driven; water temp drops to 10-12°C.

04 -- GEAR

What Gear to Bring

Beginner

Light & Stable Setup

Pack a 4.5-5.5m wave sail for May-July light winds, and a 6.0-7.0m freeride sail for autumn Bora days. Bring a 100-115L beginner-friendly board with lots of volume; Bol's shallow beach means you'll want early planing and forgiveness on water starts. Rashguard and summer wetsuit (3-5mm) essential; winter trips need 5mm+ thickness.

Advanced

Responsive Wave & Freestyle Kit

Bring a 70-85L wave board for autumn/winter swell sessions and a 4.0-5.0m wave sail for powered-up Bora days (October-November). Add a 5.5-6.5m freeride sail for marginal shoulder-season sessions. Slalom riders can exploit the flat main beach in spring for upwind work; freestyle enthusiasts will lap Murvica on light summer days. Water temps justify a 5mm winter suit and 2-3mm summer rashguard.

05 -- RENT OR BUY

Rent or Buy? Advice from Surf Store

Rent if: You're visiting for a week or less, want to experiment with different board volumes for Bol's shifting conditions, or travel light. Bol has 15+ rental shops (Futura Club, Braća Jelovčići, etc.) offering complete quiver options for €30-60/day. Quality is mixed; book ahead in summer. Rentals suit beginners and casual visitors perfectly.

Buy if: You're planning repeat trips or live within a day's drive of Bol -- your own gear means no rental queue, trusted feel, and cost savings after 3-4 trips. Ship your kit to Split, collect at the airport, and go. Beginners should buy a second-hand 5.5-6.5m sail and a 100L+ board (both under €300 used); advanced riders will benefit from owning a dedicated wave sail for October's peaky Bora. Our Duotone range ships free across the EU from €99 -- perfect for building a Bol-focused quiver at home before you travel.
