Windsurf Rig Components — Masts, Booms, Extensions & Bases
A windsurf rig is only as good as its weakest component. Your sail's designed shape relies on the correct mast bend curve, the boom needs to hold its length under load, and the extension must match your sail's luff length precisely. Our windsurf gear section covers every rig component from Duotone, NeilPryde, and Gaastra.
Masts
Masts come in SDM (Standard Diameter) and RDM (Reduced Diameter) formats, with carbon content from 30% to 100%. Higher carbon percentage means lighter weight and faster power response — critical for racing and high-wind wave sailing. RDM masts are preferred for wave sails and smaller sails where the mast needs to flex during impacts. Always match your mast to your sail's published IMCS rating and luff length.
Booms
Adjustable booms cover a range of sail sizes — a 140–200cm boom handles most freeride sails from 5.5m to 8.0m. Carbon booms are significantly lighter than aluminium, reducing arm fatigue over long sessions. Boom height and harness line position directly affect your riding stance and comfort.
Extensions & Bases
Mast extensions bridge the gap between your mast length and sail luff length. Standard extensions adjust from 30cm to 46cm. Universal joints (UJ) connect the rig to the board and must be maintained — replace rubber UJ components annually to prevent breakage. Mast bases with integrated pulleys make downhauling easier.

FAQ
Q: Can I use one mast for multiple sails?
A: Yes — if the sails share the same luff length and recommended IMCS rating. This is common within a brand's range.
Q: What boom length do I need?
A: Check your sail's recommended boom length — it's printed on the sail. Most freeride riders cover their quiver with one adjustable boom.
Q: How often should I replace my universal joint?
A: Inspect the rubber annually. Replace if cracked, brittle, or deformed — a failed UJ means losing your rig on the water.
